However, in Zimbabwe, EVs are still a rare sight on the roads. Why is that and what can be done to change it?

The electricity crisis

One of the main reasons why EVs are not popular in Zimbabwe is the chronic electricity crisis that the country is facing. Zimbabwe is producing just half of its 1,700 MW peak demand, the result of a prolonged drought that has reduced output at its largest hydro plant and aging coal-fired generators that keep breaking down. The country has to rely on imports from neighbouring countries, which are expensive and unreliable. The power utility ZESA Holdings has been implementing load shedding to prevent the collapse of the national grid. This has caused severe disruptions to businesses, industries and households, affecting their productivity, income and quality of life.

The electricity crisis makes it difficult for EV owners to charge their vehicles, as they cannot be sure when and where they will have access to power. Moreover, the high cost of electricity makes EVs less attractive, as they may not offer significant savings compared to conventional vehicles. The lack of adequate and affordable electricity also hampers the development of charging infrastructure, which is essential for the convenience and confidence of EV users.

The policy and regulatory framework

Another reason why EVs are not popular in Zimbabwe is the lack of a clear and supportive policy and regulatory framework for their promotion and adoption. Zimbabwe does not have a national electric mobility policy or strategy that outlines the vision, goals, targets and actions for the development of the EV market. There are also no specific incentives or subsidies for EV buyers, such as tax exemptions, rebates, grants or loans. On the contrary, EVs are subject to high import duties and taxes, which make them more expensive than conventional vehicles. For instance, a Nissan Leaf, one of the most popular EV models in the world, costs about $40,000 in Zimbabwe, compared to about $30,000 in South Africa.

The lack of a policy and regulatory framework also creates uncertainty and confusion for EV stakeholders, such as manufacturers, dealers, importers, service providers and consumers. There are no clear standards, guidelines or regulations for EVs, such as technical specifications, safety requirements, certification procedures, warranty terms, maintenance services, disposal methods and environmental impacts. There are also no clear roles and responsibilities for the relevant authorities, such as the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, the Vehicle Inspection Department and the Environmental Management Agency. This makes it difficult for EV stakeholders to operate, invest, innovate and collaborate in the EV market.

The public awareness and perception

A third reason why EVs are not popular in Zimbabwe is the low level of public awareness and perception of their benefits and potential. Many Zimbabweans are not familiar with EVs, how they work, what they offer and where they can find them. There is a lack of information, education and communication campaigns to raise awareness and interest among the public, especially the potential buyers, users and influencers of EVs. There is also a lack of demonstration projects, pilot programmes and success stories to showcase the performance, reliability and suitability of EVs in the local context.

Many Zimbabweans also have negative or sceptical perceptions of EVs, based on myths, misconceptions and misinformation. Some of the common ones are:

  • EVs are not suitable for Zimbabwe’s terrain, climate and road conditions
  • EVs have limited range, speed and power
  • EVs are difficult to charge, maintain and repair
  • EVs are more expensive than conventional vehicles
  • EVs are not as safe, comfortable and attractive as conventional vehicles
  • EVs are not as environmentally friendly as they claim to be

These perceptions deter many Zimbabweans from considering or choosing EVs, as they fear that they may not meet their needs, expectations and preferences.

What can be done?

Despite these challenges, there are also opportunities and potential for EVs to become more popular and mainstream in Zimbabwe. Some of the possible solutions are:

  • Addressing the electricity crisis by increasing the generation, transmission and distribution capacity, diversifying the energy sources, improving the efficiency and management of the power system, reducing the losses and theft of electricity, and promoting renewable energy and energy conservation.
  • Developing a national electric mobility policy and strategy that provides a clear and coherent vision, goals, targets and actions for the development of the EV market, and aligns with the national development plans, the climate change commitments and the sustainable development goals.
  • Creating a conducive and supportive policy and regulatory framework that provides incentives and subsidies for EV buyers, such as tax exemptions, rebates, grants or loans, and reduces the import duties and taxes on EVs and their components.
  • Establishing clear and consistent standards, guidelines and regulations for EVs, such as technical specifications, safety requirements, certification procedures, warranty terms, maintenance services, disposal methods and environmental impacts, and ensuring their enforcement and compliance.
  • Defining and assigning the roles and responsibilities of the relevant authorities, such as the Ministry of Energy and Power Development, the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, the Vehicle Inspection Department and the Environmental Management Agency, and enhancing their coordination and collaboration.
  • Increasing the public awareness and perception of EVs by conducting information, education and communication campaigns to raise awareness and interest among the public, especially the potential buyers, users and influencers of EVs, and by implementing demonstration projects, pilot programmes and success stories to showcase the performance, reliability and suitability of EVs in the local context.
  • Addressing the myths, misconceptions and misinformation about EVs by providing accurate, credible and relevant information and evidence, and by engaging and involving the public in dialogue, feedback and participation.

Conclusion

EVs are not popular in Zimbabwe because of the electricity crisis, the lack of a policy and regulatory framework, and the low level of public awareness and perception. However, these challenges can be overcome by addressing the electricity situation, developing a national electric mobility policy and strategy, creating a conducive and supportive policy and regulatory framework, increasing the public awareness and perception of EVs, and addressing the myths, misconceptions and misinformation about EVs. By doing so, Zimbabwe can tap into the benefits and potential of EVs, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality, enhancing energy security, saving costs, creating jobs and stimulating innovation.

WordPress vs Blogger: A Personal Comparison

WordPress and Blogger are two of the most popular blogging platforms on the internet. They both have their pros and cons, and choosing the best one for your needs can be a challenge. In this article, I will share my personal comparison of WordPress and Blogger based on several metrics, and as someone who has had the experience of both. I hope this will help you make an informed decision for your own blog.

Rankings in Google

One of the most important factors for any blogger is how well their blog ranks in Google and other search engines. This affects the visibility, traffic, and authority of your blog. According to a study by Ahrefs, WordPress blogs tend to rank higher than Blogger blogs on average. This is because WordPress has more SEO features and plugins that help optimize your blog for search engines. For example, you can use plugins like Yoast SEO or Rank Math to improve your site structure, meta tags, keywords, and more.

Blogger, on the other hand, has fewer SEO options and customization. You can edit some basic settings like title, description, and robots.txt, but you have less control over other aspects of your blog. For example, you cannot change your permalink structure, add schema markup, or use advanced SEO tools. This can limit your ranking potential and make your blog less competitive.

In my personal experience, I noticed a significant improvement in my rankings after I switched from Blogger to WordPress. My blog went from page 3 to page 1 for some of my target keywords, and I also got more organic traffic which I wouldn’t give much credit to the use of WordPress though but this is not to say that Blogger blogs cannot rank well, but it requires more effort and expertise to do so.

Traffic Sources

Another metric to compare WordPress and Blogger is the traffic sources of your blog. This refers to where your visitors come from and how they find your blog. There are different types of traffic sources, such as organic, direct, social, referral, email, and paid. Each of these sources has its own advantages and disadvantages, and you should aim for a balanced and diversified traffic mix.

Because of a vast SEO and optimization options, WordPress blogs get more traffic from organic and direct sources than Blogger blogs. This means that WordPress blogs are more likely to be found by people searching on Google. This is mostly because of the SEO plugins which give you full SEO options than in Blogger. With WordPress, search engine crawlers have more access to your site as there are multiple sitemaps for posts, pages, categories or even custom post types.

Blogger blogs, on the other hand, get more traffic from social and referral sources than WordPress blogs. This means that Blogger blogs are more likely to be shared on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest, or linked from other websites. This also indicates that Blogger blogs have more viral potential and exposure than WordPress blogs. Blogger being a Google service, the chances of being featured on platforms like Google news are higher than those of WordPress blogs.

In my personal experience, I barely noticed a shift in my traffic sources after I switched from Blogger to WordPress. I currently have traffic from organic and direct sources, which is more consistent and stable than social and referral sources. However, I also have some traffic from social and referral sources, which is more unpredictable and volatile. Therefore, I still have to work hard to maintain and grow my social and referral traffic by creating engaging content, building relationships, and promoting my blog.

Speed

Speed is another important factor for any blogger, as it affects the user experience, SEO, and conversions of your blog. A fast-loading blog can improve your bounce rate, dwell time, and engagement, as well as your rankings and revenue. A slow-loading blog can have the opposite effect and drive away your visitors and potential customers.

According to a study by Pingdom, WordPress blogs are faster than Blogger blogs on average. This is because WordPress has more options and plugins to optimize your blog speed, such as caching, minifying, compressing, and lazy loading. For example, you can use plugins like WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, or Autoptimize to improve your blog performance and speed.

Blogger, on the other hand, has fewer options and plugins to optimize your blog speed. You can tweak some settings like image size, widget load, and HTTPS redirect, but you have less control over other factors that affect your blog speed. For example, you cannot use caching, minifying, compressing, or lazy loading on Blogger. This can make your blog slower and less efficient.

In my personal experience, my blog was actually faster when I was using Blogger. Of course it has a few tweaks and has no plugins but that’s it’s strong point. Blogger’s simplicity makes Blogger blogs extremely fast which means that you won’t need any of those caching plugins or optimization plugins. Another thing is that Blogger themes are lightweight, and with the theme I was using, I had an impressive Google Pagespeed Insights score but with WordPress, that score took a decline.

Earnings and Adsense Integration

Earnings and Adsense integration are another metric to compare WordPress and Blogger. This refers to how much money you can make from your blog and how easy it is to integrate Google Adsense, the most popular advertising network for bloggers. Adsense allows you to display ads on your blog and earn money when your visitors click on them.

According to a report by Blogging Basics 101, WordPress blogs can earn more money than Blogger blogs on average. This is because WordPress has more monetization options and plugins than Blogger. For example, they claimed that you can use plugins like Ad Inserter, Advanced Ads, or AdRotate to manage and optimize your ads on WordPress. You can also use other monetization methods like affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, or selling products or services on WordPress.

Blogger, on the other hand, has fewer monetization options and plugins than WordPress. You can use Google Adsense on Blogger, but you have less control and flexibility over your ads. For example, you cannot choose where to place your ads, how many ads to show, or what types of ads to display on Blogger. You can also use other monetization methods like affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, or selling products or services on Blogger just like on WordPress.

In my personal experience, I believe that it’s easier to monetize your Blogger blog rather than a WordPress blog. Blogger has a minimalistic interface which makes it easy to setup Google Adsense as compared to the clustered WordPress dashboard. I also think that Blogger blogs are more prioritized by Google as per the review period of your blog.

Ease of Use

Ease of use is another important factor for any blogger, as it affects the time, effort, and enjoyment of blogging. A user-friendly blog platform can make your blogging experience easier, faster, and more fun. A complicated blog platform can make your blogging experience harder, slower, and more frustrating.

According to a survey by WPBeginner, WordPress is easier to use than Blogger for most bloggers, which I don’t validate on a personal point of view. They say that this is because WordPress has more features and plugins that make blogging simpler and smoother. For example, you can use plugins like Elementor, Beaver Builder, or Divi to create and customize your blog design with drag and drop. You can also use plugins like Jetpack, Akismet, or Yoast SEO to enhance and secure your blog functionality.

Blogger, on the other hand, is harder to use than WordPress for most bloggers. This is because Blogger has fewer features and plugins that make blogging simpler and smoother. For example, you cannot use drag and drop to create and customize your blog design on Blogger. You have to edit HTML and CSS code to change your blog appearance. You also have fewer options and plugins to enhance and secure your blog functionality on Blogger. All this is true about the creation and management process, the blogging experience is a whole lot different.

In my personal experience, I noticed a significant improvement in my ease of use after I switched from Blogger to WordPress. My blog creation and management became easier, faster, and more fun. I could use drag and drop to design my blog, and I could use plugins to improve my blog performance and security. On the other hand, the blogging experience of Blogger is more minimalistic and easy to use as compared to the blog editor you get with WordPress. However the Blogger editor has less functionalities and sometimes you have to use HTML to get the work done and not everyone can do this. This is not to say that Blogger is impossible to use, but it requires more learning and coding to do so.

Conclusion

WordPress and Blogger are two of the most popular blogging platforms on the internet. They both have their pros and cons, and choosing the best one for your needs can be a challenge. In this article, I shared my personal comparison of WordPress and Blogger based on several metrics, such as rankings, traffic, speed, earnings, and ease of use. Based on my personal experience, I prefer WordPress over Blogger for my blog. I think WordPress offers more advantages and opportunities than Blogger, and it suits my blogging goals and style better. Talk Chart: A Zimbabwean Chat App

As someone who loves to chat with friends and family online(like everybody else), I was curious to try out Talk Chart, a chat application that claims to be the first Zimbabwean-owned chat app that allows people to connect seamlessly from any part of the world. I downloaded the app from Google Play Store and installed it on my phone. Here are my thoughts on Talk Chart and its features.

What is Talk Chart?

According to the app description, Talk Chart is a fast, reliable, and secure chat app that lets you stay connected with your friends, family, and colleagues. You can send and receive text messages, photos, videos, voice messages, and more. The app also uses state-of-the-art encryption to keep your messages safe and private. Sounds pretty good, right?

Well, not so fast. The app also promises to offer some features such as buying airtime, electricity, and sending or receiving money through Talk Chart. There’s nothing bad about these though, my greatest concern is that they don’t have Ecocash or Paynow integration even though their target market is Zimbabwe. Crazy right?

How does Talk Chart compare to other chat apps?

The first thing I noticed when I opened the app was how familiar it looked. The app’s interface is almost identical to Whatsapp, the most popular chat app in the world. The app has the a green and blue color scheme, the same layout of tabs, the same icons, and the same fonts.

I was disappointed by the lack of originality and creativity in the app’s design. It felt like the developers just copied Whatsapp and changed a few things here and there. I was expecting something more unique and innovative, something that would reflect the Zimbabwean culture and identity, something that would make me proud to use a local product.

The app’s functionality is also very similar to Whatsapp’s. You can create or join groups, make voice or video calls, send or receive media files, and use emojis or stickers. Although the app doesn’t use Whatsapp’s sticker pack, that’s still not a green flag for me. The app also has a dark mode and a light mode, which you can switch between easily. The app works fine, but it does not offer anything new or different from Whatsapp.

The app’s performance is also not very impressive. The app consumes a lot of data, which is a problem for many Zimbabweans who have limited access to affordable internet. The app also drains the battery quickly, which is another inconvenience. The app also has frequent updates, which can be annoying and time-consuming. The app also has some bugs and glitches, such as messages not being delivered or received, calls being dropped, notifications not working properly and the most annoying one was that I couldn’t set up a profile picture.

What are the pros and cons of Talk Chart

To sum up, here are some of the pros and cons of Talk Chart that I found:

Pros:

  • It is a Zimbabwean-owned chat app, which is a rare and commendable achievement.
  • It is easy to use, as it has a familiar and intuitive interface.
  • It is free to download and use, as it does not charge any subscription fees or ads.

Cons:

  • It is not original or unique, as it copies Whatsapp’s design and functionality.
  • It is not innovative or creative, as it does not offer any new or different features.
  • It is not data or battery efficient, as it consumes a lot of resources.
  • It is not stable or bug-free, as it has frequent updates and glitches.

My verdict on Talk Chart

Overall, I think Talk Chart is a decent chat app, but it is not a great one. It is not a game-changer, as the developers claim. It is not a one-stop shop, as it does not have the features that it promises. It is not a Zimbabwean pride, as it does not reflect the Zimbabwean spirit.

I appreciate the effort and ambition of the developers, and I support their vision of creating a local product that can compete globally. However, I think they need to work harder and smarter to make Talk Chart stand out from the crowd. They need to improve the app’s design, functionality, performance, and stability. They need to add the features that they promised, and maybe some more that would surprise and delight the users. They need to make Talk Chart more than just a chat app, but a platform that connects, empowers, and enriches the Zimbabwean people.

iPhone 16 Leaks: The Ultimate Distraction from the Present Moment

Hello, everyone. Today, I want to talk about something that I’ve been seeing for a while: the obsession with iPhone 16 leaks.

You probably know what I’m talking about. Ever since the iPhone 15 series came out in September 2023, the internet has been flooded with rumors, speculations, and alleged leaks about the next-generation iPhone models, expected to launch in late 2024. But I also think that there is a limit to how much we should care about something that is so far away from reality. I mean, do we really need to know every single detail about the iPhone 16 before it even exists? Do we really need to see every possible render, prototype, and schematic of the device? Do we really need to debate over every possible rumor, leak, and speculation about the device?

I don’t think so. And here’s why.

First of all, most of these leaks are not reliable. They are based on unverified sources, sketchy websites, or anonymous tipsters. They often contradict each other, or change over time. They are not official, and they are not confirmed by Apple. They are just guesses, assumptions, or wishful thinking.

Second, even if some of these leaks are true, they are subject to change. Apple is known for testing multiple prototypes and variations of its products, and for making last-minute decisions and adjustments. What we see today may not be what we get tomorrow. Apple may surprise us with something completely different, or disappoint us with something less impressive.

Third, and most importantly, these leaks are not relevant. They are not affecting our lives in any meaningful way. They are not helping us to use our current devices better, or to solve our problems, or to achieve our goals. They are not making us happier, or smarter, or more productive. They are just distracting us from what really matters.

What really matters is the present. The here and now. The devices that we have in our hands, and the things that we can do with them. The apps that we use, and the content that we create. The people that we communicate with, and the experiences that we share. The moments that we enjoy, and the memories that we make.

That’s what I’m focused on. That’s what I’m obsessed with.

So, if you’re looking for iPhone 16 leaks, you won’t find them here. You’ll find them on other websites, like MacRumors, Lifewire, Laptop Mag, Mashable and many others. For the record, I’m not firing shots at any of these sites by the way, they have their belief, I have mine so let’s not end up making this controversial. itel A70: A Budget Phone with a Dynamic Bar Feature

itel, a Chinese smartphone brand, has recently launched its latest model, the itel A70, in the Philippines. The itel A70 is an entry-level smartphone that runs Android 13 Go Edition and is powered by Unisoc T603 CPU and Mali-G57 GPU. The gadget has internal storage options of 128GB and 256GB and RAM capacities of 3GB and 4GB. It comes with a dual-rear camera setup of 13MP + 0.08MP and a single 8MP selfie camera. The display is 6.6 inches IPS LCD while the screen resolution is 720 x 1612 pixels. It also supports Dual SIM (Dual stand-by). It is fueled with a 5000mAh battery + 10w wired charging. The sensors include a Face ID, fingerprint scanner, accelerometer, etc.

One of the most interesting features of the itel A70 is the dynamic bar, which is a notification bar that mimics the notch or pill-shaped cut-out found on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Max. The dynamic bar is a small dialog that shows all the notifications and can be swiped to see them one by one. It also supports music controls, text message controls, and volume controls. The dynamic bar can be customized to fit the user’s preferences, such as the size, position, background color, transparency, and edges. The dynamic bar can also be accessed from the lock screen and has a small setting bar that provides useful accessibility features like taking a screenshot, phone screen lock, and power options.

The dynamic bar feature is not exclusive to the itel A70, as it was also seen on the itel S23 Plus, which is a higher-end smartphone that was launched in September 2023. The itel S23 Plus has a 6.78-inch AMOLED curved display with 1080 x 2400 pixels resolution and 90 Hz refresh rate. It also runs on Android 13 with itel OS 13 and has a Unisoc Tiger T616 CPU and Mali-G57 GPU. The itel S23 Plus has a 50MP + 0.08MP dual rear camera and a 32MP front camera. It has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It also has a 5000mAh battery with 18W fast charging. The itel S23 Plus also has an in-display fingerprint sensor, NFC, and a Dynamic Island feature, which is similar to the dynamic bar but has a different shape and design.

The greatest question is how itel managed to incorporate the dynamic bar feature on a phone with a waterdrop display, which is the case for the itel A70. The waterdrop display is a type of display that has a small notch at the top center that houses the front camera. The dynamic bar feature is usually seen on phones that have a punch hole notch or a pill-shaped cut-out, such as the iPhone 14 Pro series. The answer to this question lies in the software implementation of the dynamic bar feature, which does not depend on the hardware design of the display. The dynamic bar feature is essentially a software overlay that can be placed anywhere on the screen, regardless of the shape or size of the notch. The dynamic bar feature can also be hidden or shown according to the user’s preference. Therefore, itel was able to create a dynamic bar feature for the itel A70 by using a software solution that does not interfere with the waterdrop display.

The dynamic bar feature is a creative and innovative way to use the notification bar on Android phones. It adds a touch of style and functionality to the phone’s display and makes it more interactive and customizable. The itel A70 is one of the few budget phones that offer this feature, along with the itel S23 Plus, which is a more premium phone. The dynamic bar feature is a unique selling point for the itel A70 and the itel S23 Plus, as it sets them apart from other Android phones in the market.

Mitsubishi Phones: A Forgotten Chapter in the History of Mobile Technology

I have always been fascinated by the history of technology and how different companies have contributed to the development of various devices and gadgets. One of the most ubiquitous and indispensable inventions of our time is the mobile phone, which has revolutionized communication, entertainment, and information. But did you know that one of the companies that once produced mobile phones was Mitsubishi? Yes, the same Mitsubishi that is known for its cars, electronics, and heavy industries. I was surprised to learn this fact when I stumbled upon some old Mitsubishi phones on the internet. Here is what I found out about them.

Mitsubishi was one of the early entrants in the mobile phone market, starting from the 1980s. It was mainly active in Japan and Europe, where it offered various models of phones with different features and designs. Some of the notable Mitsubishi phones were:

  • Trium series: This was a line of phones that Mitsubishi launched in 1999, in collaboration with GEC-Plessey Telecommunications (GPT). The Trium series included models such as Trium Eclipse, Trium Sirius, Trium Neptune, Trium Mars, Trium Geo-@, Trium Mondo, Trium xs, and Trium fx. These phones had features such as color screens, WAP browsers, email clients, infrared ports, and polyphonic ringtones. Some of them also supported GSM and GPRS networks.
  • M series: This was another line of phones that Mitsubishi introduced in the early 2000s, mainly for the European market. The M series included models such as M330, M341i, M342i, M350, M520, M528, M750, and M760. These phones had features such as cameras, Bluetooth, Java games, MP3 players, and FM radios. Some of them also supported UMTS and EDGE networks.
  • M430i/M900: This was the last phone that Mitsubishi released in 2005, before exiting the mobile phone market. Mitsubishi’s mobile phone division was part of its Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, which is still active in other fields such as air conditioners, elevators, solar panels, and satellites. Mitsubishi decided to withdraw from the mobile phone market in 2005, due to the intense competition and low profitability. It sold its mobile phone business to Kyocera, another Japanese company that still produces phones.

I think it is interesting to look back at the history of mobile phones and see how different companies have tried to innovate and compete in this dynamic and fast-changing industry. What happened to Sasai?

Sasai was once hailed as Zimbabwe’s first and leading super app, a global social payments and digital marketplace platform that aimed to improve the overall quality of life for all Africans. Launched in 2019 by Cassava Fintech International, a subsidiary of Econet Wireless, Sasai offered a range of services such as money transfer, bill payment, chat, music streaming, gaming, and more. It was available in over 50 African countries and supported 40 languages, including local dialects.

Sasai seemed to have a promising future, especially after partnering with some of the continent’s leading brands such as DStv, Kwese, and Showmax. It also claimed to have over 5000 low-cost and free Wi-Fi hotspots across Africa, as well as a feature that allowed users to earn money by watching ads on the app. Sasai’s vision was to become the “WeChat of Africa”, a reference to the Chinese super app that has over a billion users and offers a variety of services from social media to e-commerce.

However, despite its ambitious goals and impressive features, Sasai failed to gain traction among the African users. According to the Google Play Store, Sasai had only 500,000+ downloads as of September 2022, a far cry from its target of 100 million users by 2020. The app also received mixed reviews from the users, who complained about its poor user interface, frequent crashes, high data consumption, and lack of customer support. Some users also questioned the security and privacy of the app, as it required access to many permissions and personal information.

So, what went wrong with Sasai? Why did it not live up to its hype and potential? There are several possible reasons for its downfall, such as:

  • Competition: Sasai faced stiff competition from other established and popular apps in the African market, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, M-Pesa, Jumia, and Uber. These apps already had a loyal and large user base, and offered similar or better services than Sasai. Sasai also had to contend with the dominance of mobile network operators, who controlled the access and pricing of data and voice services in most African countries.
  • Complexity: Sasai tried to do too many things at once, without focusing on its core value proposition and differentiating factor. It was not clear what problem Sasai was trying to solve, or what benefit it was offering to the users. Sasai also lacked a clear and consistent branding and marketing strategy, as it used different names and logos in different countries and platforms. Sasai’s app was also cluttered and confusing, with too many features and options that overwhelmed and frustrated the users.
  • Culture: Sasai failed to understand and adapt to the diverse and dynamic needs and preferences of the African users. Sasai assumed that what worked in China or other markets would work in Africa, without conducting proper research and testing. Sasai also ignored the local context and realities of the African countries, such as the low internet penetration, high data costs, low smartphone adoption, and regulatory challenges. Sasai also did not engage with the local communities and stakeholders, such as developers, merchants, influencers, and media, to build trust and awareness.

Sasai’s story is a cautionary tale for any aspiring or existing app developer or entrepreneur who wants to succeed in the African market. It shows that having a good idea and a lot of resources is not enough, if you do not understand your target audience and deliver value to them. It also shows that being a super app is not a goal in itself, but a result of solving a specific problem and satisfying a specific need. Sasai may have been a super app in theory, but it was not a super app in practice.
